Exercise and Hair Loss: The Relationship Is More Positive Than You Think
The worry that exercise accelerates hair loss by raising testosterone and DHT is widespread — and largely unfounded. The actual relationship between exercise and hair health is more interesting and substantially more positive than the concern suggests.
01What exercise actually does to androgens
Resistance training raises testosterone acutely during and after exercise. This is a temporary spike, not a chronic elevation. Well-trained individuals tend to have better-regulated hormonal profiles, not chronically elevated DHT. The "exercise causes hair loss" concern conflates a temporary measurement with a chronic exposure.
02The positive mechanisms
Fat loss: adipose tissue converts testosterone to estrogen via aromatase. Men and women with excess body fat have unfavorable androgen-to-estrogen ratios. Exercise and resulting fat loss reduces this conversion — improving the hormonal environment for hair.
Cortisol regulation: while a single exercise session raises cortisol acutely, chronic regular exercise reduces baseline cortisol. Since chronic cortisol elevation is what drives stress-related hair loss, regular exercise has the opposite effect of what anxious exercisers fear.
Sleep quality: regular exercise improves deep sleep — the phase when growth hormone and testosterone that support the hair cycle are primarily released.
The exception: overtraining syndrome from extreme training volume without adequate recovery can genuinely elevate cortisol chronically and trigger telogen effluvium. This is exercise excess, not exercise itself. Normal training loads in recreational and amateur athletes don't produce this effect.
