Month-by-Month Hair Regrowth Timeline: What to Realistically Expect

7 min read 2026 · hairwithconfidence.com

The most common reason people quit effective hair loss treatment is that they expected results on a shorter timeline than biology allows. Here's the month-by-month reality — what's happening beneath the surface, what you can realistically expect to see, and why the 12-month mark is the only honest assessment point.

01Why the timeline is what it is

Hair grows in cycles. Follicles that have been in the resting (telogen) phase for months don't immediately restart when you begin treatment — they complete the cycle they're in, then begin the next one. The first generation of new hairs after treatment starts may not emerge for 3–4 months. The full maturation of those hairs takes 6–12 months more. You're not waiting for a drug to work; you're waiting for biological cycles to complete.

02Month-by-month guide

MonthWhat's happeningWhat to expect
1–2DHT suppression begins (fin); minoxidil initiating scalp responseNothing visible. Possibly increased shed (minox shedding phase)
2–3Minoxidil shedding phase can peakMore shedding may worry you. This is expected and temporary.
3–4Shedding resolves; first follicles entering new anagenShed slows. Very fine vellus hairs may begin emerging in some areas.
4–6Early growth phase for first-responding folliclesSubtle changes in some areas — not dramatic yet
6–9Growing follicles maturing, producing terminal hairVisible improvement in most responders. Some areas still catching up.
9–12Full cohort of responding follicles now producing mature hairThe result you can actually evaluate. Most responders clearly improved.
12+Maintenance phaseGradual continued improvement possible; ongoing treatment essential

The rule: do not evaluate the treatment at month 3. Do not quit at month 4 because you don't see results. The 12-month mark is the first honest assessment. Anything before that is noise.

03Taking progress photos

Photos at the same lighting, angle, and hair condition every month create objective data. The brain is terrible at remembering what hair looked like 6 months ago — consistent photos are the only reliable comparison. Many people who swear their treatment isn't working look dramatically different in month-1 vs. month-9 photos they've never compared.
